Religious Education

Hello, my name is Lisa Robinson and I am in Religious Education subject lead.
Valley Road Academy is made up of pupils and staff who originate from many nationalities, cultures and faith groups. As a school, we aim to celebrate this diversity and offer a welcoming and inclusive environment for all our pupils, including new arrivals and non-native English speakers.

We believe that Religious Education provides an opportunity to celebrate and foster awareness of these differences within our school and the wider world. It gives children an opportunity to celebrate their beliefs and share them with others. We love to celebrate various religious festivals throughout the year to help us learn more about them including Eid, Easter, Chinese New Year and Diwali.

The Aims of Religious Education

At Valley Road Academy, we aim to help pupils to:

  • acquire and develop their knowledge and understanding of Christianity and the other principal religions represented in Great Britain
  • develop an understanding of the influences of beliefs, values and traditions on individuals, communities, societies and cultures.
  • develop a positive attitude towards other people, respecting their right to hold beliefs that are different to their own.
  • enhance their spiritual, moral, cultural and social development by:
    • developing awareness of fundamental questions of life raised by human experiences, and of how religious teachings can relate to them
    • responding to such questions with reference to the teachings and practices of religions, and to their own understanding and experience
    • reflecting on their own beliefs, values and experiences in the light of their study.

Hello, I am Lynda Ward and I am subject leader of PSHE and RSE. In school, we believe that Personal, Social, Health Education and Relationships and Sex Education is central to the education of all children and is covered in all aspects of life in school.

It aims to promote the spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development of their pupils. Through ensuring pupils’ SMSC development, schools can also demonstrate they are actively promoting fundamental British values.

In addition to PSHE and RSE lessons all children have been involved in achieving The Rights Respecting School Bronze Award and we have achieved the Platinum Anti-Bullying Award.

The Aims of Personal, Social and Health Education and RSE:

Children need the self-awareness, positive self-esteem and confidence to:

  • stay as healthy as possible
  • keep themselves and others safe
  • have worthwhile and fulfilling relationships
  • respect the differences between people
  • develop independence and responsibility
  • play an active role as a member of a democratic society
  • make the most of their own and others’ abilities.
  • distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England
  • accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely
  • acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England
  • show further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by acquiring an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures
  • encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England.
