Derwent Hill 2022

Thursday 19th May 2022

We have had an exciting fun filled last day at Derwent Hill with multiple activities taking place so another big hearty breakfast was required for energy.

Some of the children have been to Derwent Water and paddled Canoes to little islands, where they stopped for hot chocolate. Other children have been daredevils and done the big swing which is located within Derwent Hill grounds. The various groups have also been gorge walking and getting wet.

There was a lot of photos and videos to upload today so please check them out below.

As it gave us such a good start yesterday we began the day with another big breakfast, cereals, pancakes and full English breakfasts available today. After that the children tidied their dorm rooms before coming back downstairs for a briefing from the Derwent Hill instructors.

After briefing the children got their packed lunches and all of their kit together ready to embark on another day of adventure. Both groups heading out  to hike their way to the summit of one of the many peaks around the lake district. One group started in Dodd wood and climbed to the top (502m) above sea level whilst the other group conquered Walla Crag (379m above sea level).

We were all so impressed with the children’s grit and determination to make it to the top and they were rewarded with a trip to the ice cream shop when we got backdown. Another great day for all involved.

This morning we started our day with a hearty breakfast before splitting off into our groups. One group started the day with a test of nerve, skill and team work whilst rock climbing. Everyone in this group were fantastic at tackling the challenge head on and encouraging and supporting each other. Meanwhile the second group got wet and wild with a morning of gorge walking!

In the afternoon the first group continued to conquer their fears of heights on the ‘Big Swing’, adrenaline and morale remaining high in this activity. The second group facing similar fears on the ‘High Ropes’ course.

The Valley Road teachers and the Derwent Hill staff were really proud of everyone in their groups giving everything a go and facing their fears.

Hi All

We arrived safely at Derwent Hill at 11.45am today. We dropped our cases off, had some lunch and then went straight into activities.

Group One ventured to the Bowder Stone (https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/borrowdale-and-derwent-water/features/the-bowder-stone)

The children loved exploring the area and learning some facts about the stone and how it came to rest in its position.

Group two stayed within the grounds of Derwent Hill and done some orienteering and exploration of the area.

After both groups had finished their first day adventures we had tea and then done a Team Challenge, we all split into groups and had to complete various tasks within a timeframe. Some children then watched a movie while others played games.

Keep checking back to this page for more updates as soon as we can.
