Internet Safety Day

This year the theme for Internet Safety Day was, 'free to be me'. In Year One, we talked about the internet and the exciting things we could use it for. However, we also discussed how important it is to stay safe online. We sorted lots of sentences and decided whether they were going into the space capsule or the space junk. We learnt that it is important not to give out our personal information online and to always tell a grown up if we see something that we are worried about. We decided to think of some fun nicknames and avatars to match.

National Storytelling Week

To celebrate national storytelling week, we have been re-telling and acting out our favourite stories. We then designed a new front cover for our favourite one and talked about why it would be appealing to other children. We enjoyed listening to stories being read from other adults in KS1.

Alien Invasion

In literacy, we have been reading the story ‘Aliens Love Underpants’. When we came into school we were shocked to discover that real aliens had been to visit Valley Road. We couldn’t believe our eyes when we found green slime all over the floor! Underpants were hung across our class and pictures of the aliens were scattered everywhere. We are going to write what they got up to, so that the whole school knows. We are also going to write a letter to the aliens to ask them why they came to our school.

Lilly: “They left us some underpants! I hope they don’t come back for them!”.

Umar: “I think the slime is alien poo!”

Learning from home

Come and have a look at our fantastic learning from home.

Gracie made an alien world. She said, “I made an alien planet with my Mammy and designed my own rocket too.”

Iqra designed and labelled her own alien. She also wrote a list about what she would take to space.

Computing

In computing, we have been learning about algorithms. This week we had a mission to complete! We needed to give the aliens instructions to get back to the planet Bong. We worked in pairs to give each other simple commands, we listened carefully to each instruction – we didn’t want to fall into any craters!

Later in the week, we gave the beebot simple directions to catch the alien. We understood if our instructions were not clear and simple, the beebot would be unsuccessful.

History

As part of our history topic, we are beginning to explore what the past is. The children have been exploring their own past's and looking at pictures of themselves as babies. The children were able to identify some of their friends in baby pictures and matched these with recent photographs. Can you guess which ones belong to Mrs Burnicle and Mrs Shannon?

We have learnt about the astronaut, Neil Armstrong. We talked about why he is an important figure in the past, to remember. We then ordered the events of his life.

PE - Gymnastics

This week, we took part in a sports festival. We practised lots of skills such as running, jumping galloping and throwing. We especially loved the trampolines. We learnt how to jump and land safely. Some of us were able to do tuck jumps and star jumps!

Miley, “I liked the trampolines the best. I could do a star jump!”

Klayton, “I go to Super Tramps, so I know how to jump very high. I can do straddle jump!”
