Summer Term 2017

In Year 5 our topic for Summer 2017 is Our Home City, this can be viewed below:

Hit the Surf

On Monday 5th June, some year 5s had the opportunity to take part in the RNLI's "Hit the Surf" programme. We took part in activities such as chicken running, dolphin diving and body boarding. The sea was quite rough so we got splashed quite a lot!

We had a good day and also learnt how to keep ourselves safe on the beach!

Sunderland Museum Visit

On Wednesday 14th June, Year 5 visited Sunderland's museum. We learnt about the history of Sunderland and what it is famous  for. Did you know Sunderland is remembered in history for its impressive ship building during the war? Many ships were built and repaired here. Also, Sunderland is famous for coal mining and there was a coal mine (colliery) where Sunderland's stadium is now!

We had a great day and found out lots about how Sunderland has changed over time!

Stadium of Light Tour

Year 5 took part in a tour of the Stadium of Light. We started off with a walk around the stadium, our guide told us some quick facts about what the stadium is used for now. Did you know at the end of every season, the club remove and replant the grass? While we were there, they were watering the new seeds!

Then we went inside and were lucky enough to see the Montgomery Suite where different functions and events are held. We also got shown an executive box. Did you know to buy an executive box for a season costs £20,000? We were able to go inside and sit on the seats.

During our visit, the guide told us about the history of the football club and the area where the stadium is built. Many areas in the stadium celebrate the coal mining history including a painting of Monkwearmouth Colliery. Also, there is still memorabilia from Roker Park stadium which was brought over and is displayed in the Niall Quinn bar.

The best part of the tour was when we got to visit the changing rooms! We saw where the players get ready and also where the opposition get ready. Can you guess which was nicer?
We went to see where the interviews for TV take place after the matches and had our pictures taken in the seats.

What a fantastic day!!!
